nd we’re done!

It’s been a long fifteen books about the plucky little destroyer, the USS Walker, chased by the Japanese out of World War Two and into this alternative world where velociraptors and lemors evolved to sentience, where English Indiamen, Spanish conquistadors, a boatload of American artillerymen from the Mexican-American war, a battle group from a fascist Europe and even a Q-ship from World War One came into being. Yes, a long slow slog against baddies so bad they made your teeth hurt.

And all through this, I kept waiting to find out that the series had ended prematurely, that all these pages and the hundreds of dollars of books made no difference, that I’d be left out in the cold like when your favorite show ends without conclusion (Firefly fans unite!). But no, even with a massive army of Griks in Africa and a gigantic battle group sailing out of the Med for the Gulf of Mexico (yes, that’s what it’s called) and even with those crazy dominion blood drinkers on the loose, author Taylor Anderson actually brought it home. No miracle ending, no last-minute save (there was a fleet that gave every indication of just that, but they showed up a day late). It was all “fair”. So we got a huge land battle or two, and some great sea battles, and even a dogfight. The bad guys snarled and died, the heroes lost old characters here and there, and then we were done. I closed the book and smiled. Done!

So it was a great (and long) series to get through. Looking back at it, perhaps my only complaint was the number of cavalry-riding-to-the-rescue-saves (a bit overused) but generally it had some interesting premises, some moments of awesomeness, sad events, cool moves, and interesting takes on technology and development.

And that all there is. Oh, I know there is a companion series about the American artillerymen and maybe I’ll go after it soon, but for new, I’m laying in a crumpled heap, exhausted from it all.
