Backlogged (DOG EAR)

Backlogged (DOG EAR)

es, usually I’m behind on books and reviewing late. Sometimes I’m saved when I beg a guest writer to blog a book for me. All it takes is a massive slow-read and I’m behind the eight ball again.

But that isn’t the problem now. First, I was on vacation for a week, listening to a book a day on CDs while driving. And then I came home to find my computer’s wifi down. I couldn’t fix it for a week since I needed to get a newsletter shipped. And then there was the couple of days the repairs took. And during this time, I was reading up a storm but not posting. So now my reviews are way behind.

I’ve got the Ark Royal series, the first three books I’ve now read, which is essentially Horatio Hornblower in space. It’s very exciting and well written, and I’m jealous of the author’s success.

And then there is The Collapsing Empire series, all about a young empress in charge of a galactic empire that is on the verge of falling apart. Very thrilling and, oddly, laugh-out-loud funny.

And poor Battle of the Stars, a sixties novel that was surprisingly good. I was all ready to complement it but I haven’t gotten around to it.

And The Electric State, a disturbing book of word and pictures that left me rather creeped out. I’ve been dying to write that one up.

Let’s not forget Appalachian Coal Hauler, a book by a son interviewing his father about his work in the coal fields of Kentucky. It was instrumental in helping me to understand how coal mines worked (and how the railroads worked them). Now when I’m at our club, I look at our coal mine and frown.

So that’s nine books – over two months of reviews. And I’m most of the way through Make Room, Make Room, the classic of dystopian futures. I’ve got all this coming.

So I don’t think I’m going to be too hard up for guest reviews for the near future. So much to write, so little time!

Stay tuned!
