ike, Jesus Christ, I’m glad I don’t have kids to burn time on!
I’ve got the train club (with twenty feet of pine forests to model in N-scale) (and wherever we don’t have forests, what are we modeling? Pine tree farms! No shit!). I’ve got a meteor event bashfully hiding behind heavy clouds night after night and a sky that hazes up every time I touch my telescope. And there is our game Solar Trader, which my best friend and I are readying for final release (see my free game links on the sidebar for directions to the site). As he can tell you, I’ve been adding weird shit to this game for years.
The old joke goes: Why is there time and space? There is time so everything doesn’t happen at once. There is space so everything doesn’t happen to you.
It’s all happening to me now!
I really worked out difficult story plotting a few weeks ago. I scripted the third portion of the book, got it lined up and hashed out. My buddy read what I had and really liked it. But then, pines and skies and space trading, and no time for writing. So we were on a call (my buddy and I) working out final release details. And he asked:
“You gotten any further on your book?”
Had I?
No.
And what’s what you need. If you aren’t a member of a writing group, if you don’t have that support, then tell as many of your friends about your efforts as you can. Tell them about your plot. Engage them. Dump a draft on them. Get their buy-in. Because time’s coming when you are going to be pulled away, when every second seems fulla stuff, when you are going to need someone to give you that push. If you write in your lonely artist’s loft, you’ll die in your lonely artist’s loft and nobody will know you ever wrote a thing.
Make your own fan group. Bore the crap out of your associates. But get people to keep that pressure on.
This Saturday, I’m going to wake up and hit the book. I gotta get things moving again.
