Not for Fun (DOG EAR)

Not for Fun (DOG EAR)

very so often, it happens. Instead of reading something I want to read (like that Japanese scifi Jesse Markowitz sent me), I’m stuck with something tedious.

I don’t want to read what I’m reading right now. It was given to me, a self-help sort of thing (yes, I need self-help, but I need the relaxation time more). It’s a book written by a Pfud (PHD) and while he’s got an interesting concept, you can tell he’s packing it with filler to justify that a simple article can expand to make a book. I mean, some of the little side stories are interesting as only humanistic train-wrecks can be, but it’s not riveting page-turning stuff.

This problem magnifies – since the book isn’t a thrilling struggle of man vs. whatever, I’m not interested in pushing thorough it. I don’t plop down on the couch and read a chapter or two before dinner. And I certainly don’t bring it to work to read after jogging (sitting at your desk reading a self-helper in the open just gives my enemies ammunition). I don’t lay in bed and knock off a chapter before sleep. No, I’m not getting anywhere at all.

And, outside of any personal improvements that might result, it’s a throw-away as far as this blog goes. I’ve posted almost everything up for review on this site (except for one book so horrible and so local, I didn’t trust myself to slander it – someone might hunt me down). No, outside of all the admissions I make, I’m not making this one. So that means no review. Yeah, I’m throwing two weeks of time away without anything to show for it.

In reading what I’ve written, I guess that tells me something (I complain too much? No, that’s not it). No, the realization comes that I really need to push this. The only way I’ll get through this book is to get through it. And it’s not that thick (he could only inject so much filler). Well, we’ve got a tropical storm coming in from the south this weekend. As long as the lights don’t fail, maybe I’ll be able to knock this one out and get back to crazy Japanese mercs or London after everyone dies or all those other books waiting my eyeballs.

We can do this.

The journey of a thousand pages begins with the preface.

Yeah, yeah…
