OpsLog – LM&O – 7/25/2012

Well, it’s been a while, for this blog and for ops.

Was busy with the show stuff last month so ops got canceled, and that Dale Carnegie class is on our usual ops night. Been a while. So I was looking forward to the session at the club, even though the AC was reported running dodgy, that we might not have enough guys, the usual worries.

Well, the AC ran fine. We had all sorts of membership there, and a bunch of guests. The railroad was running hot – every movement was in play, alone with several extras.

The dispatcher was running behind.

I don’t know how many people really hit this point, where you are staring at a screen lit up with trains, listening with one ear, writing with one hand, your mind spinning on how you are going to move all these trains on limited track. Usually its a glorious sense of full capacity. Tonight I was rusty – it was like my thoughts were banging against my thick skull. And, inexplicably, my excel session crashed twice. I’m not happy about that.

Everyone had fun, even though there was plenty of bitching about the overlength trains and all the traffic. I know I could have done better. How embarrassing that  I ended up with three trains corking Pittsburg and the crews on the ground working out how to save the railroad management put in the box.

Man, I gotta do better next time. Right now, I’m too busy blushing.
