The Last Watch (Review)

The Last Watch (Review)

new series by (I guess) our new author J.S. Dewes, a tale of betrayal and terror on the literal edge of the universe.

So rich boy Cavalon, a privileged brat who annoyed his all-powerful granddad in a very rebellions manner, gets “French Foreign Legioned” to the Argus, a decommissioned battleship now serving as a gutted watchpost, eyes on the “frontier”, supposedly watching for the return of an alien horror that all but annihilated us in two wars. Of course, he’s a rich boy in a ship full of angry troops who have all been sent to this outpost in the literal ass-end-of-nowhere. So there’s going to be trouble.

But nobody expected the trouble when the edge of the universe (and reality and everything) begins to collapse inward. Only a small contingent escapes on a small ship under the direction of Commander Adequin Rake, only to find that the critical jump gate in their rear has been decommissioned and abandoned. Why were they left to die? Why is the universe collapsing? What the hell?

Anyway, Cavalon, with his couple of years of rich-boy-hiding-at-university status, proves his worth time and time again, like Jim Hawkins in Treasure Island. So yes, we do get answers (of a sort) but it all leads into another book in the series (as often they do).

Okay, so not a bad novel. I rather enjoyed it, even though my copy fell off the roof of my car and got run over. Perhaps the only thing that was a bit draggy was the number of strange alien ships and stations we had to crawl about, looking for baddies, booby traps and the like. Really, while its suspenseful, it might have been a touch overdone?

But that’s only my personal opinion. You should check it out. It’s a brain-warper of a journey through space darker than you could imagine.
