The Shelter (Review)

The Shelter (Review)

The Shelter is another one of those marketing uploads onto Amazon (hey, I’m thinking about it too), a short story that leads to a greater story. This one is for free. You’ll pay for the rest.

It has some good things going for it. We open in an apartment in a failing urban setting where everything is falling apart. Little Sunni is garbed in her ballerina slippers, practicing her lessons while doper-mom Shannon wonders where the latest man in her life has run off to. With food riots cracking open the city, it’s a bad day to get evicted, but they are, curb-kicked by a sheriff and his two slimy deputies (one of whom dances around child-porn with Sunni, before stealing her slippers). Bad day in Blackrock, indeed.

They manage to wiggle their way into The Shelter, which seems to be a parking garage of sorts, managed by The Landlord. Armed guards prowl the perimeter and assign those lucky enough to get in spaces (the old car slots). And mother and daughter make an enemy there, specifically a guard with the unlikely name of Alan (really, that sounds too gentle for a guy who will, it seems, become a menacing figure later. Alan? Sounds like the guy who cuts my hair).

Overall, if was an interesting read for free. The writing style didn’t quite grab me but I could have been off that night – make your own call on it (after all, it’s free on Amazon). Besides Alan’s name, there wasn’t really enough description of The Shelter – what sort of place it was, how it was organized. I felt that a lot of details that could have been included were overlooked.

Anyway, this story is a lead in to New Hope City. You should give it a shake and see if it sets your leaves to rustling.
