n interesting little time war story. It starts off with an operative from a future world who is trying to shape the destiny of the universe to suit her masters. She is pacing through the ruins of a titanic battlefield, scattered with space ships, tanks and corpses, surveying the carnage and pretty proud of herself. And then she finds an envelope labeled, curiously, Burn Before Reading.
Inside, she finds a short letter from a counterpart of this time war, a playfully sneering letter from her nemesis. Of course, the two are heavily monitored and watched by their respective commands so they have to come up with an amazing series of ways to communicate, forming a bond with each other, pen-pals across crazy worlds of altered timelines. The methods by which the letters are passed are fun. The communications are fun. And their growing dynamic, from chiding opponents to respectful friends to possibly lovers is an interesting storyline.
The book is the work of Max Gladstone and is currently in bookshelves (if there are any left intact in your timeline). Worth your purchase and read. Cute and funny and sweet and sad.
Trust me on this.
