Norse Mythology (Review)

he missus and I have been watching a NetFlix series, Ragnarok – It’s a series about a high school kid in Norway who has come to realize that he is a reborn Thor, that there are ice giants living in his town, and that Ragnarok, the final battle between gods and giants, is coming. Great little series which I highly recommend.

Which is why, when nosing around my local bookstore, I found Norse Mythology, which might sound stuffy until you realize that writer and humorist Neil Gaiman wrote it. Thought about it – for about a second – and picked it up.

So there are hundreds of known (and who knows how many unknown) stories of Odin, Thor, Loki and the rest that were told long ago in snowbound halls. In this re -visioning (if that’s what I can call it), Gaiman takes the most famous of the old tales, beats the dust off them, and tells them fresh. In places, it is exciting. In places, humorous. But it was enticing and wondrous and thrilling. He explains where the feuds arose, he makes Thor noble yet simple (as he was) and Loki a crowd-favorite yet a real wrench-in-the-works bastard. It is a wonderful view of tales that have faded somewhat as the centuries pass.

I can only tell you that this was very good, and pretty recently published, so you should be able to find a copy somewhere (even on Amazon). Yeah, pick it up. Each chapter is a tale, so you can read a small bit each night and enjoy it when you wish. And what’s the harm in that?

Loved this one.
