The Utterly Uninteresting Unadventurous Tales of Fred, The Vampire Accountant (Review)

friend who has read and enjoyed a number of my recommendations suggested (tentatively) this book. His pitch reminded me of how I tried to ask for dates in high school. Hesitantly.

And the book (about Fred, a nerdish young accountant who is transformed into an unholy creature of the night (well, religion doesn’t show up, not really, and Fred just works overnight on his accounting practice)) is interesting. Yes, Fred is as happy as a socially-awkward noodle-head can be, and he has a source of easy-to-get blood. But then trouble raises its head. And again. And again.

The chapters are rather episodic – there is not a grand quest or end gain in this, just a series of days in the non-life of a meek vampire. And it works, sort of, in an non-challenging way. As true of many debut authors, he doesn’t seem to have earned his storytelling chops, not yet. The most horrible thing to happen, being bitten and killed (kinda) is treated as a sentence or two of pre-requirement background. That there was no overriding concern if Fred died or died, it didn’t matter – everything evened out at the end of each chapter, nothing was gained or lost.

I’m being rather hard here, I know. Anyway, I’ll still give it the same iffy recommendation my friend did – maybe it was just me. Pick up a copy and see for yourself.
